A Moisturiser with Glycerin

The Highs and the Hidden Lows

By Nat Habit

Corneocyte (outer skin tile):

“Yesss! Finally! Something landed on the surface!” “Moisture is back—I can feel myself swelling back into shape!” “Thank you, glycerin! You’re the real MVP!”

Keratinocyte (just below, rehydrating):

“Humectant detected! Glycerin's here—pulling in water from somewhere... I feel juicy!” “Skin barrier can finally repair. Lipids can be rearranged. This is what a moisturiser should do!”

Glycerin (the cheerful humectant):

“Alright, everyone! I’m going to hydrate this skin till it's plump and glowing.” “Hmm... not enough moisture in the air today… No biggie—I’ll just borrow from inside!”

Fibroblast (deep layer, raising an eyebrow):

“Wait. That pull? That upward pull—that’s MY water.” “I use that to make collagen and elastin! If you keep pulling from here, elasticity’s going to suffer.”

Sebocyte (oil-producing cell):

“There’s no occlusive in this moisturiser, is there? No oils or butters to seal things in?” “Great. Now the glycerin is hydrating and evaporating. So guess who has to step in again? Me.” “Oily sheen coming up!”

Skin Microbiome (delicate bacteria):

“This imbalance isn’t good. First we bloated, now we’re dry again. That constant back-and-forth makes our ecosystem unstable.” “We need a calm, sealed-in environment to thrive.”

Langerhans Cell (immune sensor):

“This drop in hydration from within… it could create micro-tears. Weak barrier invites trouble.” “If irritation starts, inflammation isn’t far behind.”

Melanocyte (monitoring silently):

“I’ll wait. But if inflammation flares, I’ll have to increase melanin production. Sun or no sun.”

Keratinocyte (realising too late):

“Oh no… Glycerin isn’t right. It pulled water in—but nothing’s holding it here.” “Moisturiser felt good… but without true hydration, lipids or occlusives, the moisture just walked away.”

Skin’s Final Thought:

“I don’t just need moisture—I need it to stay.” A great moisturiser is like a balanced meal: humectants to attract water, emollients to soften, and occlusives to seal it all in.

Your Skin’s Gentle Reminder:

“Glycerin gave me a drink. But without a lid on the cup… I’m still thirsty.”
