That âNice Smellingâ Cream You Just AppliedâŠ
By Nat Habit
It felt luxurious. The scent was floral, fresh, or fruity. Your senses smiled. But inside your skin, it was another story altogether.
Corneocyte (outer skin cell, wincing):
âOofâthat hit strong. What is this blend? Linalool? Citral? Synthetic musk?â âWe're already sensitive and dryâand now weâve got volatile molecules bathing us?â
Langerhans Cell (immune gatekeeper, panicking):
âAlert! Unknown aromatic compounds detected. Potential irritants entering!â âThese are not nutrients, not hydratorsâjust foreign scent chemicals. Shall I trigger inflammation?â
Keratinocyte (barrier builder):
âI was in the middle of rebuilding from last nightâs stress.â âNow Iâve got fragrance molecules destabilising lipid layers. They disrupt the barrier, making it easier for allergens to sneak in.â âThis feels like the start of a sensitivity spiral.â
Skin Microbiome (delicate bacteria):
âWhoa! These perfume compounds are swinging the pH and making our habitat harsh.â âSome of us are dying offâand guess whoâs taking over? The irritant-loving bacteria. Hello, imbalance.â
Sebocyte (oil gland, mildly irritated):
âFragrance doesnât directly affect me, but the irritation it causes? Thatâs my cue to compensate with more oil.â âEnjoy the surprise shininess later.â
Fibroblast (collagen maker, cautious):
âIf this fragrance causes chronic low-grade inflammation, weâll see delayed repair and early collagen breakdown over time.â âScent isnât worth sagging skin.â
Melanocyte (quietly watching):
âIrritation + inflammation? You know what that meansâtime to produce melanin to shield the cells.â âFragrance today, pigmentation tomorrow. Especially in Indian skinâitâs our natural protective reflex.â
Macrophage (immune soldier, pacing):
âNot every fragrance triggers me⊠but when it does, itâs a slow burnâredness, bumps, itching. Sometimes delayed, sometimes instant.â âWe call it âfragrance sensitisation.â It builds over time. You wonât know until one day you do.â
Skinâs Honest Thought:
âScent may feel lovelyâbut I donât smell. I feel. And fragrance? I feel it as an irritant. One that chips away at my calm, one layer at a time.â
Skinâs Sincere Suggestion:
âChoose products that smell like nothingâor like their real ingredients. My favourite scent? Calmness, balance, and quiet healing.â
