The Science of Face Packing
A Ritual Your Skin Truly Understands
By Nat Habit
Finally, after a hectic week of to-do lists, sun exposure, screen time, and environmental stress, it’s your moment—time to unwind, recharge, and give your skin the me-time it truly deserves. And for many of us, that ritual begins with a face pack.
Whether it’s to undo the week’s UV damage, coax out trapped sebum and sweat, or simply bathe millions of skin cells in hydration, everyone has their favorite pack.
But here’s what we often miss:
Your face pack isn’t just resting on your skin.
It’s working with your skin.
What Happens When You Apply a Face Pack?
When a face pack is applied, it forms a semi-occlusive barrier—this slows down transepidermal water loss (TEWL), allowing your skin to retain more moisture. At the same time, it modulates skin temperature and microcirculation, gently boosting blood flow and encouraging oxygen and nutrient delivery to the skin cells.
If packed with active botanicals, this temporary barrier becomes a delivery system:
- âś” Phytonutrients from herbs
- âś” Polysaccharides from aloe vera
- âś” Fatty acids from oils and seeds
- âś” Flavonoids and phenolic compounds from fruits and flowers
These are absorbed gradually through the stratum corneum, activating repair, hydration, detoxification, and anti-inflammatory responses right where your skin needs them most.
But Only If It’s The Right Kind of Pack…
While the market is full of exfoliating, brightening, or detoxifying masks, many are loaded with synthetic fragrance allergens, preservatives, petrochemicals, and harsh exfoliants like glycolic acid or salicylic acid in abrasive concentrations.
These can strip the skin barrier, disturb the skin’s microbiome, trigger inflammation, and lead to reactive dryness, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and sensitivity flare-ups—especially with regular weekend use.
Even some “hydrating” sheet masks can be deceptive. They offer short-lived plumpness due to glycerin and humectants but don’t provide nutrient depth or long-term skin repair. Think of it like fast food for your skin—satisfying but not sustaining.
So, What Should You Put on Your Skin?
Nature has already made your perfect face pack—you just have to choose it wisely.
Herbs, flowers, fruits, spices, seeds, roots—each of these carries bio-active compounds intelligently designed by nature to nourish, repair, and protect plant tissue. And here’s the beautiful part: many of these actives speak the same language as our skin cells.
Let’s look at how:
- Milk & Yogurt – Packed with lactic acid, vitamins A, D, B12, and peptides, they gently exfoliate while hydrating deeply.
- Sandalwood (Chandan) – Rich in alpha-santalol, it soothes inflammation and helps reduce melanin production naturally.
- Turmeric (Haldi) – A source of curcumin, a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that calms acne and heals micro-tears.
- Manjistha – Detoxifies through glycosides and purpurin, encouraging lymphatic drainage and pigmentation control.
- Daruharidra & Lodhra – Anti-bacterial and astringent, these herbs tighten pores and balance sebum.
- Nagakesar – Reduces redness and improves skin texture with its flavonoid-rich profile.
- Aloe Vera – Contains acemannan, a polysaccharide that binds moisture to skin and boosts wound healing.
- Almond – Loaded with Vitamin E and healthy fats, it strengthens the skin barrier and boosts elasticity.
- Orange Peel – Full of Vitamin C and citric acid, it promotes collagen synthesis and offers gentle brightening.
- Kalonji – Known for thymoquinone, which helps reduce oxidative stress and supports skin regeneration.
- Rose (Gulab) – Beyond fragrance, it offers anthocyanins and tannins that soothe inflammation and balance pH.
The Science-Backed Glow of Tradition
Lepa by Nat Habit

We’ve all seen our dadi and nani lovingly whip up secret glow recipes—pastes that filled the room with earthy scents and left skin radiant. While we may could never know what was in their recipes, we’ve crafted something they’d surely be proud and amazed of.
Lepa by Nat Habit is not just natural—it’s deeply bio-active, with 10–15 fresh ingredients chosen and combined to preserve their functional chemistry.
We studied how each ingredient works and ensured its delivery in the most potent form:
- Sandalwood is delivered through freshly ground paste—not extract—preserving its sesquiterpenes.
- Almond lends its goodness through almond oil, rich in oleic acid and Vitamin E, allowing deep skin penetration.
- Manjistha and lodhra are used in root form to retain their natural antioxidants.
- Rose is added as pure petals and hydrosol to retain both oil- and water-soluble actives.
Each Lepa is handcrafted to suit your skin and your seasons. (Watch our Co-founder - Swagatika, explaining the radiating secret behind Chandan Nagakesar Lepa) No preservatives, no synthetics—just fresh, potent nourishment wrapped in age-old wisdom and modern understanding.
